Bernhard Wolfgang Petzal was born on 28 February 1941 in Hilversum in the Netherlands. His parents Werner Petzal and Fanny, née Oppenheimer had hoped to escape the persecutions in Germany by fleeing to the Netherlands.
In January 1942, the family, together with grandmother Selma Petzal, was sent to the Westerbork camp, where the twins Elisabeth and Robert were born in August 1943. In February 1944, they were all transported to Theresienstadt. From there they were deported to Auschwitz in October 1944, where Bernhard Wolfgang, his parents, siblings and grandmother were murdered on 16 October 1944. His father Werner was murdered on 27 January 1945.
