Sylvio David Calamaro was born in Berlin on 15 November 1924 and lived there with his family until the Nazis came to power. The family emigrated to Greece in 1933. Sylvio was 9 years old at the time.
In his application for compensation, he states that he was only able to go to school for 3 years due to the persecution. We know nothing about the family's life in Athens. Sylvio's mother died when he was just 17 years old. With the occupation of Greece by the Nazis and their allies, the family fled to Crete. Sylvio David states in his application for compensation: "During the Battle of Crete, I managed to escape to Egypt on an English evacuation ship." His sister and his uncle Isidor fled with him to Egypt. He went to school in Cairo for another year and then worked there from 1941-1942. When the Axis powers under Field Marshal Rommel advanced to within 100 kilometres of Alexandria in July 1942, he, his sister and his uncle fled to Palestine. Sylvio joined the Greek exile organisations there and trained as an aviator. Rommel's Africa Corps was defeated at the end of 1942. He returned to Greece with the Greek troops in August 1945.
After the war, he tried to save the Athens company together with his uncle Isidor, but failed. At the time of the application for compensation, he was working as an employee. From the correspondence that Sylvio had with his father, it is clear that Sylvio was very close to his father and that he was very worried about him. It must have been a heavy blow for him when he committed suicide. Sylvio died in an accident on 5 December 1992.
