Elisabeth Jeanne Petzal was born with her twin brother Robert Harry on 10 August 1943 in the Westerbork camp in the Netherlands. Her parents Werner Petzal and Fanny, née Oppenheimer had hoped in vain to escape the persecutions in Germany by fleeing to the Netherlands. They had been deported to Westerbork camp in January 1942, together with their first child Bernhard Wolfgang and Selma Petzal, Werner's mother.
In February 1944, they were all transported to Theresienstadt. From there they were deported to Auschwitz in October 1944, where Elisabeth Jeanne, her parents, siblings and grandmother were murdered on 16 October 1944. Her father Werner was murdered on 27 January 1945.
