Robert Harry Petzal was born with his twin sister Elisabeth Jeanne on 10 August 1943 in the Westerbork camp in the Netherlands. His parents Werner Petzal and Fanny, née Oppenheimer had hoped in vain to escape the persecutions in Germany by fleeing to the Netherlands. They had been sent to the Westerbork camp in January 1942 together with their first child Bernhard Wolfgang and Selma Petzal, Werner's mother. In February 1944, they were all transported to Theresienstadt. From there they were deported to Auschwitz in October 1944, where Robert Harry, his parents, siblings and grandmother were murdered on 16 October 1944. His father Werner was murdered on 27 January 1945.
